...SIGNIFICANT SNOW AND BLOWING SNOW NEW YEAR'S EVE INTO NEW YEAR'S DAY...
.A period of snow, heavy at times, is expected over the Appalachians of western Maryland, eastern West Virginia, and western Virginia beginning late afternoon and lasting through Thursday morning.
Near-blizzard conditions are possible late evening through early Thursday morning, with the worst conditions and highest accumulations most likely along and west of the Allegheny Front.

* WHAT...
Heavy snow and near-blizzard conditions are expected, with total snow accumulations between 4 and 8 inches (locally 8"+ along western favored slopes). Winds will gust as high as 50 mph.
Visibility may drop to one-quarter mile or less at times. Wind chills will fall to as low as 10 degrees below zero.

In Maryland, Eastern Garrett and Western Garrett Counties.
In West Virginia, Western Grant, Western Mineral, and Western Pendleton Counties.

* WHEN...
From 4 PM this afternoon to 10 AM EST Thursday.

* IMPACTS...
Visibilities may drop below one-quarter mile at times due to falling and blowing snow. Whiteout conditions are expected and will make travel treacherous and potentially life-threatening.
Travel could be very difficult along the I-68/US-40 corridor west of La Vale, MD, US-48 corridor west of Moorefield, WV, US-33 west of Franklin, WV, and US-219 from the PA/MD line to WV line. The hazardous conditions will impact the evening and Thursday morning commutes. Gusty winds could bring down tree branches.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...
A wave of snow showers may result in a coating to 3 inches of snow along and west of the Allegheny Front through this morning, prior to the Winter Storm Warning. After a lull, snow will increase in coverage and intensity late afternoon.
The onset of near-blizzard conditions could be just before midnight on New Year's Eve and continue into the early morning hours of New Year's Day. Make preparations now to avoid travel during this time.
