...Dense Fog and Poor Visibilities Expected Across the Higher Terrain Tonight...
Widespread rain and low clouds were spreading across the region late Wednesday evening in advance of a weak cold front slowly approaching from the northwest combined with several upper-level disturbances. This weather pattern is expected to remain in place overnight. Low cloud ceilings of 1000 feet or lower have resulted in cloud ceilings intersecting the ridges of the higher terrain across southwest Virginia and northwest North Carolina. As a result, elevations generally above 2500 feet will likely see severely restricted visibilities at times throughout the night.
Visibilities as low as 1/4 mile or lower can be expected, including portions of Interstate 77 between Fancy Gap and Wytheville and Interstate 81 between Wytheville and Marion.
If you plan to travel through this region overnight, use extreme caution. Be alert for areas of rapidly changing and severely reduced visibilities. When you encounter areas of severely reduced visibilities, reduce speed, use low beam headlights, and allow for extra space between you and the vehicle in front of you.
